New hard drive install have factory restore disks

Hi;
I am a newbee to the forum, and find it very informative, and lots of good info. I
have a R40 2723-LU7, original factory restore disks (p/n 01R8517), and a new
Hitachi 60 gig hard drive (DK23FB-60). I tried to do a restore to this hard drive
which failed. The first disk went fine the second made it about 97%, then said
“unable to read disk”, (unknown hard drive or restore cd), clicked ok then went to
black screen with cursor blinking.
In reading threads I see that my drive might not be set up correctly (beers/parties),
as I saw during the install, something about unable to write or maybe unable to read
BEERS. Anyway is there a program that will make the drive firmware do
BEERS/PARTIES, and where can I get it? Second, if I correct my drive issue, will
the factory restore disks function correctly, or do I need format the drive or do
something else? If so what is the next step? After the botched restore I used PC
DOC on the restore disk to clear the disk. Since it took about 4+ hours to do, I
assume that it wrote “Os” to the drive, but I have not checked yet. I have changed
the modem card to a bluethooth / modem card and changed the original 802.11A
card to a 802.11 A/B/G card. Will this affect my restore? I have 2 R40s, I plan to
put a new drive in the second one and give to a friend. The restore disks will work
on both, but I am not changing the modem or wireless card on the second, so I
would like the restore to work on both. Any and all assistance would be greatly
accepted!!
Thanks
Randy

Welcome to the forum.
If PC DOC is similar to Active@killdisk or DBAN, it should be OK.
For the recovery disks to work properly you need a new or wiped/zeroed hard disk.
Don't pre-format it.
I would suggest to leave the wifi, modem and bluetooth cards out during the install.
If they are defective, they would screw up the install.
You can always download the drivers later from IBM/Lenovo.

Hi;
Thanks for the info. Do I need be concerned about the drive and it's ability to do the BEERS/ PARTIES thing? Also, if I use killdisk, will it also write the hidden part of the drive, if it has one, or do I need to unhide it first? I believe the seller stated new drive meaning taken out of a new laptop, before using, formatted, and replaced with a larger one, then sold smaller one
Thanks
Randy

I know nothing about BEERS/PARTIES (but do know about beers & parties :wink: ).
I've never ever had a hard disk that needed any of that, and I have used probably hundreds of HD.
Those programs wipe the whole disk.
After that, you can use the Recovery Disks.
