no internet

#1 Post by pablo126 » Mon Sep 14, 2009 9:38 am

My internet access suddenly stopped. I use the lan port, now I get nothing at all (no light on the router either) I have tried using a network card also a usb lan connector, no success at all .I think the inbuilt modem has packed up. Is it possible to get an external modem in a usb dongle ? There are wireless usb dongles , are these merely a receiver for the wireless signall or do they contain their own modem? Laptop is an ancient i-series 1200 so I should just dump it but before I do I would like to try an external modem. Stan.

If you have no lights on your router then that is the thing to investigate first of all. Which ISP do you use? Have you contacted them? Have you tried someone else's router, e.g. an internet cafe?

Come back with some answers and we'll try to help some more.

I,m using a Netgear adsl router dm602. I use 2 desktop pc,s with this router with no trouble (in use at the moment) There are 4 lights on the router, I notice the light on the left starts flashing when data starts coming through (but on the laptop light does not come on) I plugged the router rj45 cable into the lan port still no light. Then I bought a usb lan adapter , this has a red light which does come on also the lh light on the router lights up but does not flash like when I use the desktop pc,s When this trouble started there was a slight smell of burning so maybe some item burnt out on the mother board. My isp is ukonline but Iuse this on my desktops with no trouble . Stanw.

Hi Stan,

Your router works OK. Your desktops work OK with the router. Your laptop doesn't work with the router. That wasn't clear and evident from your first posting. Every bit helps, as they say.

Have you run 'PC Doctor for DOS' bootable on your laptop to test everything out? If not then I suggest you download it and make a bootable CD and then run the tests and then report back.

All the best.

Hello Killer I went into Google and was directed to the download site for Pc doctor for dos. I went through all the downloads available but there were none for my model (1161-11g) I was told it was possible to access a similar thing without going on the internet, by pressing the button at the far left of the keyboard marked "thinkpad" I tried this but no response at all. A message is coming up on the screen saying "Checksum error 072" so I went into the bios setup and set all defaults but that message comes up every time. There are several things not working, The rj45 port, one of the 2 usb ports also the network card slot. So the motherboard could be on the way out, Funny that xp works without problems. Stan.

Stan,

Go to this page: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-56222
and then follow the instructions carefully.

You will be able to download an exec that enable you to create an ISO file. You then burn that to a CD using whatever program you do that with. (I use RecordNow which was preloaded on my machine.)

Anyway, I am going off on holiday tonight for a couple of weeks so hopefully someone else will be able to help if you get stuck. Good luck. :)

I believe what you need for your i1200 (1161-11G) is this version of PC Doctor:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... IGR-4PBMD8

This comes from the Series-2 listing here:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... IGR-4L4NTP

This download package of two executable files will create two floppy disk which you can then use to boot the system.
