DVD-R or DVD+R: Which type for what application?

After searching the old and this new TP forum I decide to ask a question which is technically maybe not so easy to answer (because there is maybe no "clear" answer possible).
Using the newest Slim-Line Multi-DVD-Burner from Toshiba/Samsung (SD-R6472...even DVD+R DL media are possible to burn) I am free to burn -R and +R DVDs.
Once I read that DVD+R discs will store the data more reliable because Philips make very strong quality specifications for this type of discs.
On the other hand it seems, that DVD-R are readable with mostly all dvd-drives including stand-alone dvd-player.
Please tell me your opinion, what kind of discs you would be use for data backup (has to be readable with most of the dvd-rom drives of computers) and for use for stand-alone dvd-players.
TIA,
