T43 monitor issue

#1 Post by cyradis4 » Wed Oct 28, 2009 8:42 pm

Hi,

I have an IBM thinkpad T43, and it has worked beautifully for almost a year. I got it gently used.

Well, a few hours ago I had a problem start, and after searching on the internet, it seems monitor issues are kind of common. But I'm hoping for some specific diagnostics.... And hopefully to be able to affect the repair myself.

The problem:

I was working on the laptop as usual, and the screen died. The laptop still seemed to be on, so I plugged it into my flat screen monitor. Yup, it was still on, and drove the flat screen just fine.

In the different light, I could just make out the outline of my background.

When I press the little button that turns off the screen when the top of the laptop is closed, and then let it back up again, the monitor flashes back on, for between 2 and 30 seconds, then it goes dark again.

Another thing, and I'm not sure if it's related at all, but sometimes when I just start it up, the screen has a faint red tinge, particularly in the lower right hand corner. This disappears once the laptop has been on a few minutes.

Thank you for any and all help!

The red hue on startup is dead giveaway for a failing backlight (CCFL), nothing else gives out this symptom.

Although the backlight is replaceable, it's a PITA job and you may be much better off replacing the entire screen.

What is the 7-character model number of your T43?
