Any experience with WD Scorpio Black - vibration?

#1 Post by mpcook » Fri Oct 30, 2009 12:20 pm

I just purchased a WD Scorpio Black 160GB 7200RPM drive for my X60T. Why I needed a replacement is another story for another thread. However, this is brand new from Newegg with 5 year warranty. The drive vibrates so much as to be quite irritating if my hands are on the laptop (which of course they are frequently). Maybe I am overly sensitive but I think not. Does anyone have experience with this drive, and if so, did you notice more vibration than the average drive. I have had plenty of Fujitsu, Toshiba (the one I replaced in this instance), Hitachi, IBM and none come even close to this amount of vibration. Conceivably this is normal for this drive. If so I will return it (and pay restocking) or sell it. But if not, I will RMA it and try another.

Any thoughts on this?

Thanks,
Mike

Go for a different brand.
If you do a forum search with "scorpio black vibration" (without the quotes), you'll be appalled.

OK now I am moderately appalled. I did poke around a bit before but obviously not well enough. The 5 year warranty was appealing, the vibration is appalling!

Any suggestions for a quiet reliable replacement? I may use the WD in an external case for backups and save the restocking fee. I suppose unless it "walks off" my desk I should be okay.

Thanks,
Mike

did you already try re-mounting it in the rails/drive bay? Sometimes drive vibration is simply due to poor mounting.

I'm looking for a new drive and had narrowed it down to the Scorpio Black or the Hitachi Travelstar 7K320... since I already have a lower capacity 7K320 in my T400 I might just get another Travelstar (except they're apparently out of stock everywhere).

Or you could wait for the new Travelstar 7K500 that should be shipping this month :D
570 --> T20 --> T40 --> T43 --> T61 (4:3) --> T400 -->T420 --> T440p + X240

:D
I have remounted it and actually it improved a bit. However, right now I have reinstalled the 120GB Toshiba which came with the X60 and it runs more quiet and smooth. I think I'll keep the WD in the external case, with OS installed, as a backup. If needed, I can slip it in the X60 and be ready to boot and go.
