Screws for Mini-PCI

#1 Post by j-dawg » Sat Nov 14, 2009 11:27 am

In the process of replacing my X61t's 4965AGN with an Atheros ABG card (for hackintoshing), I stripped the heads of the screws holding in the Mini-PCI card. The screws were so tight that they chipped my precision drivers instead of turning. I have the Atheros card installed in the other slot (it works fabulously, by the way; it picks up stronger signals than the Intel card, despite lacking fancy MIMO antennae, though it seems hotter than the Intel card) but now I can't get any wireless in Windows from either card.

Card funcationality issues aside, the screws are frustrating me. I am going to buy a needle file and cut some slots into the heads of the screws so I can remove them with a slotted screwdriver. This is a [censored] sight better than my old plan, which involved doing the same using a Dremel. However, I will be left without screws - I am currently using the "A" screw from underneath the right side of the palmrest to hold in the Atheros card, and I don't want to do this forever.

Anyone have any idea where I can get replacement Mini-PCI screws, or at least more "A" screws? While we're at it, anyone have any ideas about getting the screws out that doesn't involve filing down metal?

Those screws are M2 x 3.5mm, try get them in a hardware store, or in a shop where they sell trains, mini-aircraft, remote-control cars and the like.
