After T6x Thinkpad T,R & SL Series Highest Screen Resolution
After the phasing out of the SXGA+, UXGA resolutions in the last of the T60, T61 era laptops...
What are the highest screen resolutions available on laptops of the following size?
13"
14"
15"
What would be the Max Screen resolution they offer and which models would they be? (I am guessing this is Thinkpad T, R, SL etc..)
ALSO - I am doing this to help a cousin who is interning as a budding CPA and does a lot of EXCEL work hence a larger screen workspace with resolution would be beneficial v/s having to scroll all the time.
Please advise.
Thanks.

13" - X301 WXGA+
14" - T400, R400 WXGA+
15" - W500 WUXGA
If they really want a lot of real estate, get him a T60 or R60 with the QXGA screen.

Thanks FG. I guess all the good resolutions on the 14" ones are gone.
I am curious though - I personally have a T61 14" NVidia and several months back I had bought a T400 14" for a cousin with the highest screen + Camera available.
Few questions on that:
- How are the T400 & T61 comparable in terms of weight?
- Would the W500 be substantially heavier than the T400 or T61 14" ? Would it have the balanced portable feel that the T61 14" has.
- How are the W500 price ranges? .. if there is a general consensus?

I'd say the pretty close with the same battery, but I don't have any figures for you.
I think it's about a pound or so heavier, again depending on the battery. Whether that works for you probably depends on your needs. For me, I don't need a lot of battery or portability and I like the better screen, so a 15" works for me. If you need battery life or a more mobile notebook, then a smaller notebook may make a bigger difference for you.
I'm not a pricing expert, but I'd say they're competitive. If you can wait for coupons or use the outlet, you can do pretty good in my opinion.

W500 is not a light machine, but is VERY well balanced, and even with a 9-cell battery feels comfortable to move around.
Apart from screen which leaves a lot to be desired, it's an excellent piece of equipment in my opinion.

Interesting:
I am currently skewed between possible options:
Used T61 / T60: 14" : SXGA 15": WUXGA
OR
New W400: 15" WUXGA
What price point & price differences would make one "better financial value" over the other? I know this is highly debatable but a wise guesstimate from the regulars would be great.

Pass on the T61/p generation entirely due to nVidia GPU failures.
W500 is a much better machine than any T61p could ever hope to be, quiet and fast, and not that expensive anymore.
My $0.02 only...

I am guessing you wont say the same with the ATIs on the T60 series ? Thoughts?

No I wouldn't because their failure rate is nowhere near nVidia's. Problem here being, with T60/p you're stuck at 3GB RAM, although you can get a proper LCD.
If you need more than 3GB RAM, and LCD quality is NOT your top priority, W500 is your best bet.
In case that 3GB RAM is sufficient, and that you want a real LCD, T60/p in 15" (4:3 non-XGA guise) is your next step.
My $0.02 only...

What do you mean when you say "Failure"? Care to elaborate? I have an NVS 140 M in T61 SXGA+ 14" and Love it, the form factor & everything.
LCD Faults or Video Card failure?
Are any of the Non-Thinkpad Lenovos worth venturing into in terms of the high resolution and maybe some inherited thinkpad-like toughness?
I cant seem to find a good Black Friday deal for the W500. Any recommendations?

George is talking about nVidia GPU failures in the T60 series. It's was a common problem across all manufacturers a year or two ago. I believe Lenovo used the nVidia Quatro NVS 140Ms, built on the G86 core which was reported to be defective. I've never owned a machine (for very long) with that GPU

. I own a T500 with the WSXGA+ LCD. It is very nice, and it is for sale.

I thought the T500 / 400 series did not have the higher 4:3 resolutions. How can the T500 have 4:3 SXGA+ ? Do let me know the configuration & pricing on it.

Are any of the non-thinkpad Lenovos installed with High Resolution screens?
If I was to go Non-Lenovo, are there other laptops you'd recommend with High Resolution screens? Dell or HP or otherwise.. I know nothing matches a thinkpad, but I hate that the high resolution screens have disappeared...

SXGA+ was an early morning typo. It is WSXGA+. The only other (new) machine I would recommend as far as LCD quality, I also own. A Macbook Pro.

I've handled MacBookPro's I dont like how they feel and their screen "resolutions" leave much to be desired.
I cant say the Dell WUXGA 1920 x 1200 screens are FlexView good, but I like their high resolutions.

To each his/her own. I actually prefer the default Macbook Pro resolution 1440x900. I had the same on a T400 and liked it there as well.
