Large ThinkVantage Toolbox icon after update
Hello
Machine in question: Thinkpad T43 2668, OS: XP Pro.
After I upgraded my BIOS and ECM from pretty old versions (2005) to the latest versions, I got a message box telling me to install updates for my ThinkVantage toolbox. I did so, only to discover that this application suddenly put a huge icon next to my battery indicator. This icon is bigger than the rest of my icons, so it actually changes the height of my taskbar all together, and that's not how I want it to be.
So is there any way to get rid of this icon there? The application is also accessible trough the Start menu, so I really don't need any icon on the taskbar. But there are no setting/choices to remove this icon. The application seems both good and useful in other ways, so I don't feel like uninstalling it entirely unless that's the only way of solving this.
Thank you!

Re: Large ThinkVantage Toolbox icon after update
Ok, this is no longer any issue. I discovered that the TV Toolbox wasn't any update, it was a totally new application (133Mb) So I confused it with one of my other Thinkpad specific applications.
So it's now deleted. I have never had this application before, and never missed it. And when it places a badly designed impossible-to-get-rid-of icon somewhere it don't belong, I didn't feel like letting the application stay on my Thinkpad anymore.

Re: Large ThinkVantage Toolbox icon after update
Have the exact problem as you. I receive a message today to update the toolbox and the result is a new icon to the left of the battery gauge. The program seems nice and I don't mind having it, but the icon is so big it raises the size of the Taskbar across the bottom. The icon seems dynamic in that as the Taskbar increases in height, so does the icon increase in size, but it will not go as small as the other icons and it does increase the Taskbar a tad.
Like you, I was ready to uninstall the program just to get rid of the icon, but then I noticed that my copy of PC-Doctor was no more; it must have been uninstalled at some time while the "new" Toolbox was being installed. (This may have happened anytime during the past year; I have not been following closely.) Now, I like PC-Doctor as a resource so I kept looking and found that the offending icon is actually a Toolbar and not just an Icon -- which means that I am able to remove the "icon" from the Taskbar by simply un-selecting it in the Toolbars drop-down list on the dialogue which opens when right clicking the Taskbar (XP). Icon problem solved.

Re: Large ThinkVantage Toolbox icon after update
Ouch! I looked in the Start Menu settings, but I didn't look in the toolbar menu..
It seemed to be a nice application. Right now I don't miss it, but I'll let it reinstall if I get asked again. And I will probably let it be included when I reinstall my XP sometime in the close future.
Thanks!

Re: Large ThinkVantage Toolbox icon after update
Yesterday afternoon, I didn't have a clue what you guys were talking about here. I sure do now! The first toolbox upgrade came in on my X31 while I was checking Email. I glanced at the message, and got the drift that it was a update to pc-doctor, so I allowed the update. Thank you, tilneford, for pointing out that the new icon is actually a tab for another toolbar. I was kinda stumped on how to exit the application. BTW, it displays correctly on this X31, but does the "large icon" thing on my wife's T61 running Windows 7. I believe that it has something to do with the screen resolution that the user has selected.tilneford wrote:Have the exact problem as you. Gotta go, my T43p is whining about this update too.

Re: Large ThinkVantage Toolbox icon after update
So maybe it had nothing to do with the fact that I updated the BIOS anyway, then. My thought was that the new BIOS version suddenly supported something the one I had didn't support.
Happy I posted it here!

Re: Large ThinkVantage Toolbox icon after update
I'd be very interested in seeing how I can stop this application from launching at startup. This is one program that I don't need running all the time.
Sorry, I'm a bit off topic. Maybe someone knows the answer so I don't need to start a new thread.

Re: Large ThinkVantage Toolbox icon after update
I had the same approach, but I couldn't find anything under msconfig/Startup or under Taskmanager that indicated that this application was launched at startup and/or was kept running in the background. Some of the application abbreviations can be a bit cryptic, though. Anyway, my observations indicated that this application isn't launched before you actually click the now famous Toolbar.
Maybe I am wrong, so don't trust this as an finite answer.

Thanks! You are correct. It's just a 'Toolbar' item that you can add/remove from the windows toolbar.Norway Pad wrote:I had the same approach, but I couldn't find anything under msconfig/Startup or under Taskmanager that indicated that this application was launched at startup and/or was kept running in the background. Right click on Windows (7) toolbar, go to 'Toolbar' and select/unselect what you want. I am running Windows 7, though I assume it's the same for other versions.

Re: Large ThinkVantage Toolbox icon after update
Kind of an old topic but after a VPN update today, I had TWO of the #$&% oversized Toolbox icons in the taskbar. Thanks for the tip! The toolbar dropdown did the trick. By the way I found that disabling the Toolbox and then enabling it again brings it back at the same size as the quicklaunch icons. Unfortunately a reboot sets it back as it was before.

Re: Large ThinkVantage Toolbox icon after update
I don't even bother putting that app on my Thinkpads.
If the PC-Doctor is a necessity for people what I do is download the CD ISO and use that disc instead.
It makes more sense to boot it up and run the app from the CD without the OS environment loaded.

Re: Large ThinkVantage Toolbox icon after update
I vaguely remember a past thread in which the possibility of changing the icon size permanently was discussed (Can't find it). I believe there was mention of editing a file or the registry, but I can't remember.
Does anyone else remember? Did it solve the problem?
Personally, I'd like to keep it there to remind me to defrag and run tests, but only if I can keep it at the same icon size as the taskbar.

Re: Large ThinkVantage Toolbox icon after update
What is with these huge Lenovo icons in the task bar? I don't need to be able to see them from 30 feet away.
