ultrabay hard drive, chkdsk

i think i had this problem before, and don't remember how i resolved it, but i recreated it.

almost every time i startup, chkdsk runs and checks my ultrabay hard drive.
what i've done recently, which i believe is the cause, is reset my bios settings to default settings.
i did this by hitting F1 during startup, to get to the bios setup/options.

i faintly remember there being something i can do to prevent these chkdsk runs everytime i startup... but didn't find an old post about it here, or by google searching.
anyone know?
also, the reason i reset my bios settings was, i noticed my ultrabay hard drive was listed as 'disk 0' in disk management.
i thought this might be related to boot order, and to my inability to unmount/eject my ultrabay drive.

in the past i would be able to, but these days, it almost never wants to eject.

any ideas?
thanks,

Hi, im thinking about another hard drive in my ultrabay. is the ultrabay drive selected as the slave, if not, make sure it is, you want hard drive just under the PCMCIA slot to be the master/the one the laptop boots from. I pressume the ultrabay drive doesnt have an OS installed on it? To change from master to slave on an IDE/PATA drive (pressume it is, most ibm thinkpads are PATA), just change the "jumpers" over on the ide connection, these are the ifferent jumpers combinations....

So it runs the disk check everyimte you start up, this may be becuase...
.the hard drive in the ultrabay is not the slave., it must be the slave to work properly.
.the hard drive in the ultrabay is faulty/damaged.
.you dont shut down correctly (always use the proper method, dont ever just hold down the button unless in an "emergency", ie the computer is being completely irresopendent therefore to close it down you have to hold down the power button.)

When you next see the check disk menu, there is a way of cancelling, I think it's an F button or ESC, it tells you on the menu. when my r40 was working, it wouldnt run without the AC adapter as the battery was pretty had it, so whenever i removed the charger the whole system died and when i turned on the r40 again, I had to go through disk check.

I take it, that like me, you have an A31, or A30, or a Thinkpad with the ultrabay expansion slot?? Can you please tell me the actual model of your laptop (ie Thinkpad A31, Thinkpad R52 or something!) becuase that my help me help you!
hope this helps!

FYI: you don't use jumpers on any hard disks in a Thinkpad.
On 2-spindle machines the main drive is always Master on IDE Channel 1, the ultrabay drive is always Master on IDE Channel 2 (even if you put a floppy drive in it).
I don't think it's different on a 3-spindle machine where 1 is a floppy, 2 is a hard disk and 3 is the ultrabay.
