My daughter was trying to get online to do homework stuff last night, and kept getting messages like your computer is at risk, we found these harmful programs on your computer.......click here to remove these harmful items.....and many were trojans, worms etc..........and it appears to be MS Internet Security trying to get me to buy the program "for the low price of 49.95" type thing. It is relentless! You can't do anything online without this thing popping up everywhere. I did a full scan with microsoft security essentials which I have had on this computer for a while, and it found a couple of things (none of them seemed imminently dangerous though). I'm skeptical that MS is bullying me into buying this software by making up threats that they will gladly save me from , for 49.95!
Has any one else experienced this? Suggestions?

This is the very worst kind of "drive by scum ware". Clicking the .EXE to install the "solution" will load tons of dangerous virusware on your system.
Set your User Account Control to the highest setting. It's more inconvenient but gives added safety. Never, ever click on a .EXE file that you do not know is safe.
Microsoft Security Essentials is free and does not behave like that. Stay off the sites that generate the phony alerts.
Run a thorough Microsoft Security Essentials scan (not quick scan) to clean up anything that may have been dropped into your system.
Google around, and you can read up on this hoax. It is well known and documented.

That's definitely NOT MS trying to flog you something.
Get Malwarebytes or Superantispyware, both free on the web.
Download/install/update and then run either or both.
That should help you get rid of that pest.

Wholehearted agreement ... who needs it ... unless they use it?

Thanks to all, right now, it's shut down until I can deal with it this weekend.
