Windows freezes after wakeup from standby

Hi I'm new to this forum and will appreciate any help that you guys can offer.
I recently purchased a Class A refurbished IBM Thinkpad T60 running Windows XP SP3. I've had two thinkpads before, but this is the first one I've had that uses Lenovo's ThinkVantage software to manage user login-logoff etc.
Basically, when I wake the machine from standby mode, nine times out of ten it will 'freeze' (i.e. not re-enter the Windows environment), just showing my background image. The only way I seem to get out of this is to force power off by holding the power button which means I am unable to save my work, end my programs, and shut down the machine properly. Obviously I don't want to keep doing this as I don't want to run the risk of corrupting my disk etc.
I've run Lenovo's system update utility to update the latest drivers, and also done the latest Windows updates. I heard something about a Windows bug called the 'black screen of death' (not blue) and am wondering if this is anything to do with this.
If anyone has experience with this I'd appreciate any help you can give, and hopefully a solution.
Thanks in advance,
Mark.
