Seagate 7200.4 firmware for hd without lenovo p/n?

I have a Seagate momentus 320gb 7200.4 and I have downloaded the corresponding firmwareupdate from Lenovo:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-63685
When trying to update I get a message along the lines of "no drive to update"
I tried running it in both ahci- and compatibility-mode as suggested but to no avail.
I imagine that the issue is: "This firmware update utility may not update a drive without a Lenovo part number(P/N), even its model is identical to a drive in the supported drive list. The drives with Lenovo part numbers include firmwares designed for using with the ThinkPad system."
In this thread
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthr ... ost5682127 it is suggested that the update released from dell can be used on other systems as well.
Can something similar be done with the update released by Lenovo?
I am unable to determine if Lenovo and dell have customized the update, if not, then ofc I'll just use the one from dell.

If your HD does not have an IBM/Lenovo FRU or P/N, that FW update will not work.

yes, that much is pretty clear..
So my questions remain the same,
Is there a way to bypass the issue in a way similar to the dell release
and
is there any difference between the firmware in the dell and the lenovo release?

Why do you need to update the firmware?
Return the HD if it does not work in your TP.

Because I (like may other owners of the seagate 7200.4) seem to have issues with clicking sounds and powermanagement
The firmwareupdate adresses these issues
Both the dell and the lenovo release will only run on specific partnumbers
There is, however a workaround that allows me to update the drive using the dell release and I merely wanted to know if I can do the same with the lenovo release before using the dell.
The drive has been working for 6 months but has always been noisy and powerhungry

Have you checked the Seagate website then?

No update has been released from Seagate
Seemingly the only ones out there are from dell and Lenovo..
Alot has been written on this issue
http://forums.seagate.com/stx/board/mes ... rue#M16853
I just wanted to see if any thinkpad people had an opinion as my essential question remain unanswered in all the forums I use...

ok, so I finally did a backup and succesfully upgraded from 0002 to 0005 using the dell iso
Only thing is, it did not solve my problem of my harddrive always spinning regardless of powersettings and use..
I am getting tired of this now and I am on the verge of spamming seagate with hatemail.. I miss my old momentus 5400....
Gonna try some of the apps that ppl recommend here, but I'd really like an app that can monitor the drive realtime, rpm and such..
Any suggestions or general advice?

That strongly suggest that these updates are related to something to do with the overall support profile for those brands, and nothing much specifically to do with Seagate 7200.4 drives in particular.
Applying a Dell update to a Lenovo system under those circumstances is a very questionable choice, to say the least!
