It's time to install a drive overlay program... just do a google on it, hitachi might even have it on their site....
drive overlays translate the LBA information so that the operating system sees the drive's true size, not what the bios says it is....

For a long time I used Windows NT 4.0 sp6 on my 380z, which has a 20 GB hard disk. I didn't have to do anything fancy to the 380z, but I did have to swap in the sp6 hard-disk driver during the floppy installation. Mail me if you need more information about this process.
If you install Linux or a BSD, you'll have a happier experience.

For more information on your problem, check out the following link:

You have run up against "The Int 13 Interface (7.88 GiB / 8.46 GB) Barrier".
EDIT: And for information on "Software Translation Drivers (Dynamic Drive Overlays)",

The Hitachi DriveManager, which puts an overlay on Hitachi drives, is for download on the ThinkPads.com main site.
