"Allow Windows to manage wireless networks" missing

Here's a weird one..
I have a customer with a Thinkpad R32.
It has a builtin wifi adapter which the computer sees as a Intersil Prism2 (now taken over by Conextech - so no
support or drivers that I can find
I can find no mention of this as an option from IBM (the specified models are variously a LinkSys or a Cisco Aeronet or IBM High Rate Wireless Mini-PCI Adapter (Part 26P8472))
I can connect if I disable all encryption on the wap. But with any type of encryption on, I get the "Limited connection: can't get an IP address" message which I know is because the encryption has not been negotiated correctly.
There is no utility that I can find on IBM support sites to mange the wifi. (I tried the the IBM "Access Connections" utility but it does not seem to do this functionality).
The adapter properties under the drivers has fields that can be filled in such as the SSID, encryption type,
but if I use these, then it will only be able to connect using that one set of values - so it won't be usable at other waps.
(And I couldn't get it to work even with the appropriate values entered).
The WZC service is running ok, and I am right up to date with SP3 and updates, and ESS antivirus. I reset the stack using netsh as well. And the wired connection works perfectly.
The wierd part is that the wireless connection comes up as if its another lan (wired) connection (instead of a little wifi symbol) when it pops up with an exclamation through it in the system tray.
And under status, it does not have the VIEW WIRELESS NETWORKS button, nor the "Allow Windows to manage wireless networks" .
I have tried reinstalling the driver cw10.sys by pointing to this file in system32\drivers when prompted under update drivers.
I have not yet tried uninstalling and letting it redetect. A bit wary of doing this as it may never work again!?
Any pointers? Obvious (or not so obvious) things I have missed?
