I wanted to retire since more than 1 year ago my beloved T42p 15" Flexview but every time i get put off but the current mediocre screen quality.
I love my 1600x1200, the form factor is a tad large for me (only in footprint, in thickness is great) and dont need these fancy ports or so, but my Flexview quality has no parallel to nothing i have seen in Lenovo.
However now we have models like X201, X201s, X200T, X301, T410(s), etc... and i wonder, Is there any current lenovo to which i won´t feel disappointed with the screen quality? Reading posts here it looks like the X200T is good, even if with a pretty low 1250x800 and bad speakers... What about the X301, would i feel disappointed with its screen colors?
If nothing, another couple of years with my T42p, and it is already 6 years!!

Some of the tablets might come close, but no current Lenovo laptop has an LCD that is anything close to the quality of your IPS Flexview T42P. Same goes for other manufacturers, although Macbook Pro's are nice.

So the so famed LED screens only gives more brightness and vivid primary colors, am I right?
besides with pictures, can one tell the screen difference in quality of Flexview vs. LED when watching a DVD movie too?

Simple answer is yes. Have tp x300 and also Apple Cinema Display, which is IPS display with CCFL backlighting. Watching same videos on both, image quality is much better on the ACD.
Of course, IPS is 8 bit whereas most notebook displays, including thinkpads, are 6 bit. The viewing angle makes a big difference too but I find that it's easy to tell the difference between 6 bit color vs 8 bit color.
Richness of color makes certain videos more pleasing to the eye and adds to the experience. 6 bit colors comes across as rather flat compared to 8 bit. Most of present generation TP LCD's are inadequate for applications that require color correctness.

Oh
In that case i will stick with my senior T42p for another couple of years.
I wonder if Lenovo has noticed how many of us (many with high acquisition power) are putting off with new purchases just because a screen 6yr old technology is not available now... In 6yrs i would have just got 3 laptops for sure! Not to mention to how many people i´ll have recommended it!! But these screens is something i won´t compromise on.
I was hopping on the X301´s screen will be not to far from an IPS
Thanks guys!

keep a look-out in the marketplace forum for a t60p. there have been a number of 15" uxga models sold recently. there was also a sweet 14" sxga just sold.
these flexviews are the last that ibm/lenovo put out, unless some of the high-end tablets are ips (dunno?). they'll also take a core2duo upgrade if you want to run a 64bit os and you can get big, fast sata hard drives for them, too. i'm extremely happy with the performance of mine and plan to keep it running long into the future.
cheers!

I second that regarding the T60p. I have the same model... the 2623-DDU which I picked up three weeks ago from an architectural student on Craigslist. It has the most pleasing display I have ever seen on a computer thus far. From its manufacturing date I believe it has the Boe Hydis.
Not only are the colors pleasing, but the whole display has a kind of solid look to it, and it's very easy on the eyes. I have less eye fatigue looking at this beautiful 15 inch display than on any other computer I've used. Curiously, the sharpness of the UXGA screen has not proved productive of eyestrain, and one can always increase text size in Firefox, or in most productivity software.
I had been scouring eBay, Craigslist, and the forum marketplace for a couple of months, and then one Saturday morning this model appeared through a window of opportunity that lasted about six hours. I jumped through that window and am very happy that I did. In this case, patience paid off.
Good luck,
taichi
