Did I hurt it? (temp. question)

#1 Post by Tõnis » Thu Mar 18, 2010 4:28 pm

I run mobilemeter and regularly monitor my system's temps. Usually, at full throttle, the GPU/CPU/HDD temps hang around 49/45/32 degrees celsius. For the past few weeks, I've noticed that the temps have been hovering a bit higher at full bore: 70-90/50-60/35 degrees celsius, depending on load. (In my ignorance, I just thought the Skype program was causing the higher temperatures, and I didn't notice any performance decreases whatsoever.) Today I was feeling ambitious and decided to blow the dust out of the fan. A bit of dust came out. When I started the machine again, the temps at maximum performance were noticeably lower, back in line with that which was, before, the norm. The machine wasn't always set for maximum performance during the two weeks of increased readings, so it wasn't always hot, but still, I wonder if I've caused some damage that will reduce the lifespan of my machine. Was my machine designed to handle this extra heat? TIA for your thoughts, ideas, and experience.

the thermal thresholds for the gpu and cpu are 100C, so you're ok.
Current: X1CT-G3 / Helix-G1 / X220 / T61p / T60p / X301 / X200T / Yoga 3 Pro

Thanks, Sarbin, for putting my mind at ease. These thresholds are also good for me to remember for future reference.

My system's staying nice and cool now. The lesson for me this time: don't be so lazy, clean more than just the screen once in awhile! A seemingly high-tech anomaly (or problem, even) can often be alleviated by a low-tech fix. I often tend to look too deep into things and overlook the obvious.

nice thing about thinkpads, at least in my experience... treat 'em well and they'll serve you well for a long time.
