Just bought a Thinkpad edge, it has a 43Y6553 (ThinkPad 11b/g/n Wireless LAN Mini-PCI Express Adapter II?) wireless card. I also have a Linksys 610n dual band router which works fine with my other laptops, but my Edge only sees the G band of the router. my guess is that the network card installed doesn't support 5.4Ghz 802.11n and that's why it doesn't show up as one of the options.

can someone please confirm?

That is a real possibility.

I know that isn't exactly confirmation but there ARE WiFi cards that only support the 2.4GHz wireless-n band and not the 5.4GHz one.

But if your router is a dual band, it should transmit in both N-bands.
Maybe you need to go into the properties of your laptop's wireless connection to select the proper N-band?

Or for that matter make sure your router is not set to broadcast on 5.4GHz only.

Well, I would need the laptop to be able to pickup 5.4Ghz, I live in an apartment and 2.4Ghz is not really an option due to the amount of interference I get. the fact that the laptop can't pickup 5.4Ghz would be a deal breaker for me.

The 43Y6553 card has a Realtek RTL8192SE chipset, which is the culprit.
There are also 60Y3177, 60Y3185 and 60Y3187 cards listed as B/G/N, but each have N disabled!

Your card only supports 802.11N in the 2.4GHz band

You may need to get an Intel Centrino wifi card (N-1000, N-6100, N-6300 or Wimax-6250).
Check their specs first!

Unfortunately I can't buy a wireless card unless its from lenovo which cost ridicules amount of money due to the "Unauthorized network card error".

I'm thinking of just returning it and getting myself an X201. it would cost almost twice but its a better laptop.
