DVD regions?

Hello thinkpad forums :D
Thank you for a great and informative forum.

I played a region 1 DVD (live in DK, so region 2 local) on my T41p yesterday (using powerDVD), and a windows popped up, saying that I could only change the DVD regions four more times. Does this mean, that last region played out of 5 tries, will be permanent for the drive?
I mean, why isn't the CDRW/DVD combo drive region free? I haven't used the t41p to play bootleg DVD's or anything like that. One of my mates brought home some DVD's he had bought in the US while traveling. A lot cheaper than in DK, of course.

Is there a way to make my CDRW/DVD drive region free? I very raqrely play region 1 DVD's, but I really don't want to worry about my drive suddenly going region 1 permanent on me
:?

The solution :D

Hello again

Found a solution, though software based.

AnyDVD.

EDIT: and for the record: it's absolutely legal.

Yes, that's exactly what will happen. After 5 changes the drive will lock to the last region code, thanks to the efforts of the motion picture industry.

I'm not sure if there are patches for firmware of the drives found in ThinkPads. The easiest (but costly) solution is probably to buy a cheap used drive for each region.

Thank you for your post.

I also thought about buying another drive, like you just wrote. But the cost and trouble with changing the drives (on the move etc) for the two regions, was just too much. I'm going to try out AnyDVD :)

AnyDVD looks like a good software-based option. Could you please post how your experiement turns out?
