upgrade conundrum

#1 Post by toad » Thu Apr 08, 2010 12:26 am

I've got a T41 and I'm reasonably happy with it. I've upgraded it, had to get a new mobo 'cos of flexing, new hard disk, got a better wifi card, new DVD burner, and it has served me beautifully since.

What gets my goat though is that its hardware apparently does not support threshold charging for the battery. I've tried and failed to make it happen manually (and am still trying...), but this is a feature I would dearly love to have!

So here a list of criteria (1 - really important, 5 - not very important):

- battery charging threshold capability +1
- graphic card capability +5
- processor speed +5
- needs to be quiet, power saving and run at low temperatures (for what it is worth, my T41 runs at below 40°C which is fine) +1
- needs to be robust as I travel a lot and it gets thrown about a fair bit +1

I checked the T43 but apparently it suffers from heat problems... I wouldn't mind dual core ( :) ) and nearly got tempted on T61p but if it weren't for their dodgy nvidia graphics cards (found that one out thanks to this forum...). Sooo, 2 down, how many more to go?
bog standard T41 (2373), 54MBit Wlan, DVD-burner, purring along at 35°C or thereabouts on ArchLinux

How about a T60 or R60 with the Intel GPU if you want a quiet machine? I had a R60 with Intel card. It ran cool and quiet. Mine was solid, though you don't get lid protection like on the T60, but with a similar configuration, the R60 is cheaper if you can find one.

I have had both a T43 and T43P. I guess the might run a little hot. The truth is all I really dont know. Maybe a 15" intel graphic based T43? Use a utility to undervolt the processor to reduced the heat. I still use my T41 every day, it get a little hot but the fan control untility works fine.
Good luck

t42, and I would assume some R51 machines support the battery thresholds. I have that option on my t41 (which has a t42 mobo, if you were wondering).

For a core duo system, get a t6x or R6x with an intel video card, and choose the form factor depending. - If you like widescreen, look at the Z6x...
