Please, can anyone help me in finding a layout diagram of the system board for an R50/R51 series Thinkpad ?

I don't believe IBM has ever released schematics of ThinkPad motherboards.

Thanks, GoofyGAguy. It's a pity though,as they do provide a comprehensive service manual and lots of other goodies on the Lenovo site.
As it happens, I may not need it, as I've traced the fault to the DC power input socket and, with luck the system board may work OK.

If it's poor contact:
Bend a very small hook at the end of a paperclip.
Remove the battery from the laptop first.
Then work that small hook into the DC socket and lift up the rounded metal strip on the side.
Do this a few times to get the 'old' shape of it back, and provide better contact again.

RealBlackStuff- a neat solution, thanks.
Unfortunately I had already replaced the socket with a new one and appear to be back in business.
I tried your solution on the old socket, without much sucess, but found that there is a thin slot in the front face of the socket and by flattening the paper clip end so that it would fit in the slot, I was able to bend the ground contact forward. So I now have a spare socket.
Thanks again for the suggestion.
