Differences between X20 and X21?

#1 Post by paddyw2001 » Tue Jun 29, 2010 3:31 am

Hello all

I have an old Thinkpad X21 that's a bit battered but works OK. I've seen a 'spares or repair' X20 in my local newspaper and was wondering what the main differences between the two models are- i.e. will the keyboard and hard disk be a straight swap etc

Any help would be greatly appreiciated

Regards

Patrick

Welcome to thinkpads.com!

The main difference between the X20 and X21 would be the processor speeds. The X20 was offered with 500Mhz Celeron and 600Mhz Pentium III CPUs. The X21 had 600Mhz and 700Mhz Pentium III processors. Both either can have an SVGA or XGA 12.1" screen. The keyboard would be a straight swap. The same hard drive may be swappable since both systems have the same underlying hardware, with the exception of the CPU; the X20 may have the Celeron while your X21 has the PIII.

Download a copy of the Hardware Maintenance Manual for the X2 systems from here: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... UZMN7.html

Also, grab a copy of this: http://www.lenovo.com/psref/pdf/tawbook.pdf It's a quick listing of some of the more popular systems (by TYPE-MODEL number) and gives some details about the hardware. If your system (and the parts X20) TYPE numbers are not listed in the tawbook file, then plug in the TYPE into the "Quick Path" box at this site: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ...
