S30 wifi card detected as LAN NIC! Help please

#1 Post by RealBlackStuff » Thu Jul 08, 2010 1:58 pm

I'm working on a rare Japanese IBM S30, and managed to get Windows 2000/SP4 installed (without a CD drive).
Found video and audio (and other) drivers for it, which installed fine.

The machine came with the original miniPCI wifi card 802.11b (P/N 08K3310, FRU 08K3309).
This was replaced with a Broadcom BCM94306MP 802.11b/g card.

Now the problem: this wifi card is detected as a NIC instead of a wireless card.
It finds wireless networks, but any driver/utility I throw at it, will not let it function as a wifi card.
So I removed the card, and put in a PCMCIA 3Com NIC.
This worked fine as a NIC.
But then adding the wifi card makes it still act like just another NIC.
What to do?
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

Here's a shot in the dark. Try using the proper S30 drivers for Win2k for Networking and Modem from the below link. See if that frees up resources for the WiFI card.

Is the broadcom card an IBM FRU? This may be a BIOS issue as well ...

Thanks Harry, I already referred to that link in my first post.
The problem must be in the (lack of) wifi-security of W2K.
W2K only works with WEP, although there are tricks to let it also work with WPA and WPA2.
Unfortunately these tricks don't work with the original card, nor with the Broadcom card (which does not have a FRU).
Don't have a spare Intel or Atheros card with a FRU at the moment, so can't try them.
It goes against my grain not to get it going, but unfortunately there is little or no support available for this machine...

This machine can run with XP, but with only (maxed out) 256MB RAM that's no fun, although it would solve the wifi problem.

The S30-owner informed me to leave it be for the moment, so I will.
