Hi, I'd like to ask if anyone has tried to use UDMA cf cards with CF-IDE adapter as hard drive replacement. I see there are mainly two kind of these adapters now, one from Addonics and one from Syba. I'd like to know if anyone has tried those, and what's your experience.

I have a generic reader that I got from Micro Center, which I use occasionally in my X24. It works, but is extremely slow to write to. In ordinary usage (ie mostly random access) I didn't notice much difference from a regular HDD setup, so I have only used it when I needed vibration tolerance. It is totally silent, though, which is a little eerie - even with quiet computers, we don't realize how much noise is being made until it's gone.

What CF card do you use this that adapter? Seems need very fast ones to work with. Like 400X or 600X cards to reach 60M/s speed.

Check out the thread below. It is now over 3 years old so some of the flash cards tested are no longer relevant, but there is a ton of useful data in the post. I use a 133x Kingston card in my X40 and it works well. There are probably better alternatives out now though.

I feel there are better cards already right now. I'm really close to buy one and try.

It's worth noting that if you take this approach you might find that the random 4K read/write performance leaves a lot to be desired. The big, juicy-looking numbers you're referring to are sequential read/write speeds, and are not what matter most in typical desktop workloads.

Dont know how good this price is, quality is pretty good though.

SanDisk Extreme III 4gb. I believe that's 266x. I also had a cheapie A-Data 266x that was similarly slow.

I don't know the reason for the slowness in my X24, but I found that a hard drive was better suited for most of my purposes. The CF cards were free on Black Friday so I don't mind risking them when the need arises
