IBM Thinkpad (mode r42?)
IBM Thinkpad (mode r42?)
My LCD/Monitor started flickering a little bit the other day. Now, it's out completly. When you start it up, it comes on and then goes off about 5 seconds later. If you close/open it, it comes on again for about 5 seconds and then goes blank again. The laptop is booting/working fine.
I saw a post about that little button that gets depressed when the laptop is close. But it's not stuck, and seems to operate fine. If I push/release it the display comes on for 5 seconds an then goes off again.
Any idea what's up? The laptop works fine pluged into another monitor via the video/display port.
Thanks,

It's either a defective inverter of bad CCFL (back light). My first guess would be a bad back-light, but an inverter is cheap and can be tried first. If you need to replace the CCFL most on the forum would recommend that you replace the entire LCD panel.
Re: IBM Thinkpad (mode r42?)
If I replaced the entire LCD - would that take care of both the CCFL and inverter?
P.S. - I don't know if this helps, but there is a buzzing noise when the LCD is on. Would that be more inverter related for CCFL? Again, I might just replace the whole LCD to be safe if that covers both.
Thanks!

Re: IBM Thinkpad (mode r42?)
The inverter and LCD are separate components. Buzzing is inverter related, but the buzzing could be caused by a worn out CCFL
. If this is a critical repair (as in it must work the first time) then get both an inverter and an LCD panel. If you purchase a complete LCD assembly with covers. cables, etc it would include both. EBay is a good start.

What thinkpad is this? Are you referring to a T42? The title says R42. Has the display ever shown a red or yellow tint?
