Outlet concern

#1 Post by jwxie518 » Wed Aug 25, 2010 11:26 pm

I see some of them are max config, but they are around $1000-$1100
Some are just entry, and they are listed $1300.... and they are all refurbished.

Is the low price an indication of bad condition?
Thanks.

Earlier this month, I purchased a T410 at roughly $100 less than the lowest price offered with a Core i5. I ended up sending the unit back for warranty repairs to have the system board and wireless card replaced. Nearly ten days later, my laptop came back to me in good condition, and it's been working rather well so far. If this isn't mission critical and saving money is important, then I'd consider the outlet, but if you need more advanced tech support and warranty options or this laptop is essential to the functioning of your business, you may want to consider buying new just in case.

FWIW, I wasn't to impressed with the customer service though. No e-mail confirmations were sent, and I ended up having to call to ensure that my order was fulfilled and potentially shipped. Luckily, I received it 5 buisness days after ordering. The other downside was at the time, very few machines had 64 bit Windows 7, so I'm left with a machine that has 32-bit Windows and 4 GB of RAM. If anything, I'd spend the extra money on getting a 64 bit OS at all costs.

I stand by my earlier statements of strongly advising anyone not to purchase any Thinkpads in the outlet, until the "non-extendable 1-year warranties" policy is revised.

Accessories are a different thing.
Current: X220 4291-4BG, T410 2537-R46, T60 1952-F76, T60 2007-QPG, T42 2373-F7G
Collectibles: T430s (IPS FHD + Classic Keyboard), X32 (IPS Screen)
Retired: X61 7673-V2V, A31p w/ Ultrabay Numpad
Past: Z61t 9440-A23, T60 2623-D3U, X32 2884-M5U

Thank you for the comments. It really helps. Right. The logic doesn't really work, and I wait and see. I probably would get a really cheap one and buy a new Thinkpad later. Hhahaa

Thanks.

Admittedly, that's the depressing part about the outlet. The units aren't really that much cheaper than what you'd buy new in the case of current stock. I lucked out with a deep discount on my Core i5 T410, but in a few cases, I've seen the real difference in prices be at most $50 or so. For $50 more, you'd get a brand new unit with more options for the warranty, and you can pick a 64 bit OS instead of having to pay for a proper recovery disk...
