Harddrive Password removal?

#1 Post by eyeland » Mon Aug 30, 2010 9:57 am

I have a Seagate momentus 5400 that I would like to use as a secondary HD in my ultrabay HD caddy.
It used to be the systemdrive of my 2. hand t61 and it has bios(?) password enabled.
I assume that the password is to blame for why I can't "activate" it in disk the management utility.
Any workaround for this?
(as always, plz point me towards the relevant thread if this issue has been solved elsewhere)

Love you all ;)

Put that hard drive in the main HD bay where it came from (T61), and remove the password (if you know it).
If you don't know the password, you have a doorstopper, there's no way around that, unless you want to spend $500.- plus in a forensics lab.
That password is stored internally on the hard disk, and may, but need not, be the same PW as for the BIOS of that machine.

Supposedly you CAN remove the password:

But I'd suggest checking with Seagate as there are many "Momentus" 5400 rpm models and the password implementation may vary.

Sorry for bringing this post back to life after such a long time, just started working on it again.
The issue seems to be that the HDD password has been set on a different machine..
Regardsless of whether I put the drive in the ultrabay or as the main HD, the HD password option in the bios is grayed out (doesn't happen with my other drive)
Can a password be "hard-reset" by flashing firmware or something similar?
I have no data on the disk and I DO know the password.. I just want to get rid of it since it ennoys me :)

Apparently discussion of that subject is against the forum rules.

The drive manufacturer may be willing to discuss it with you.

oh.. I see.. I understand that the solution could be used to break into other peoples gear.. just too bad for me.. another brick for the fridgemagnets..
In the end of the day, an 80gb 5400 is not really worth all that trouble...
