For XP Diehards: Windows 7 Family Pack discounts return!

#1 Post by RealBlackStuff » Fri Sep 03, 2010 4:50 pm

Beginning October 3, 2010 in the U.S., you’ll once again be able to buy the Windows 7 Family Pack, which gives you three upgrade licenses of Windows 7 Home Premium for an estimated retail price of $149.99. (Typically, online retailers discount that price by 10 bucks or so.)

I just picked up a "new, old stock" of this locally because it's perfect for changing the rest of the machines in our home to Windows 7. They needed to bring this back!

according to the documentation this can only be used to upgrade from vista to 7. unlike the other upgrades that can upgrade from xp. is this true? can this family be used to upgrade from xp to 7?

With Win7 in general, you can purchase the upgrade license whether you're switching from XP or Vista. However, only Vista will work for the upgrade install process, where your settings, docs, programs are all kept intact. With XP you will have to do a clean install.

In short, you can get the cheap one, but w/ xp it's more work for you.

i understand all that. i already put windows 7 upgrade from xp on 4 thinkpads. what i need to know is will the family pack upgrade from xp to 7? the description from microsoft specifically says from vista to 7, it says nothing about upgrading from xp. all the other upgrades say upgrade from xp and vista to 7.

Do you mean legally or technically?

From the Amazon page...
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Family Pack allows users to install Windows 7 Home Premium on up to three PCs in a household that already has Windows Vista or Windows XP installed
Cheers.
