which brand 2.5" HDD suits my old R61

#1 Post by rbi » Sun Sep 12, 2010 8:34 pm

I was wondering which bran of 2.5" 7200rpm 500GB will be the best option for my R61 89185MM upgrade. I am considerting Seagate Momentus 7200.4 ST9500420AS - hard drive - 500 GB - SATA-300 or HITACHI Travelstar 7K500 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Internal Notebook Hard Drive - OEM

For Seagate, I can see there is other model Momentus 7200.4 ST9500420ASG - hard drive - 500 GB - SATA-300 . Is there any difference from ST9500420AS on top of the names? Is it worthy to pay $33 (AUD) more to get this?

For Hitachi, I can see Lenovo website lists the model. Is it worthy to pay $40 to get it directly from Lenovo (free of shippin)?

Thanks a lot.

By the way, which software is the best to clone the original HDD (I want to keep the hidden partition and everything intact). Is Macronium any good per CNET?

Cheers,

They all perform about the same in real world usage in my experience. You might want to take a look at the Momentus XT. It's a platter based drive with a 4GB flash drive attached. It can speed up boot times and commonly used applications.

Many thanks FredGarvin. That's really helpful. I will be comparing the costs via the website.

Would the Seagate Hybrid be compatible with the R61 BIOS and etc.?

The XT is a standard 2.5" notebook hard drive. I foresee no issues for you.

Seagate has free software to clone your drive...there is no real reason to buy the drive from Lenovo. Buy it from a vendor that will stand behind it for the first 30 days...after that you would deal directly with Seagate.

"G" means it has the free-fall sensor; this sensor senses when the hard drive is in "free fall" and park the head(s), trying to prevent a head crash. You don't really need this because your R61 already has Active Protection System.
