Attaching 3.5 in HD to TP - compatiblity?

Hi,

I need to temporarily attach my 3.5 in ATA HD to my TP R40. I want to physically connect the drive through the UltraBay tray with a 44 to 40 pin adapter and I will power the drive externally.

Does anyone know if there are any problems with plugging a 3.5 inch drive into the TP as far as compatiblity of the TP seeing the 3.5 in drive?

My external Maxtor 250Gb USB / Firewire drive crashed (MFT corrupt). The Data Recovery software needs a direct bus connection in order to recover the data, the USB connection doesn't work.

I realize what I am suggesting is unconventional, but it seems like it should work. Any help will be appreciated!!

Ken

PS:
The drive which will be removed from its case is a Maxtor One Touch 250Gb Hard drive: 3.5 inch ATA with Ultra ATA 133 interface. It is formatted NTFS, like my TP.

Should work, they have the same bus interface (of course with different connectors). Technically, your recovery software should be able to do everything in the external enclosure though. Unless the programmer forgot the option to select that drive...

Volker,

Thank you. I agreed with your comment "Technically, your recovery software should be able to do everything in the external enclosure though". I spoke to the company, Stellar (software is Stellar Pheonix NTFS) and they say that the USB (and Firewire) are not fast enough for their software??

Stellar is the only software that I tried that immediately saw the data directory on my damaged drive.

crashes are complicated.. : (
