System Unit Serial Number set, what's the other one in BIOS?

#1 Post by alkemyst » Thu Sep 23, 2010 5:44 am

I was able to get my System-Unit serial number set locally. However, what's the number used for the System board serial number?

The tech said the System-Unit # is all I need for ThinkTools to work.

My UUID was already set.

Is the System board serial number used? I can't remember if my old motherboard had one set or not.

I am debating to go back now that I have found a Model number that also includes the Wireless N adapter.

Thanks

Å

What is Thinktools? In order to get Thinkvantage System update to work I don't think you'd need a systemboard serial number. Try it.

System Update 4 is what I have.

It reads the System Unit Serial Number from the registry. The work around is to edit the registry each time or have the BIOS set. Otherwise you get an error message saying your model is invalid (mine was coming up TP_74 or something, now it comes up with that BIOS entry)

I have the BIOS set now, but when we were doing it there is another serial number entry there.

If it's supposed to have something in it, I rather have it done now.

Thanks

My mistake, for some reason I thought you were taking about the systemboard serial#. The same place that programmed the machine type/model will also have to program the 'system unit' serial#.

That's the problem...they say it's not needed. What number is it so I can just have them do it.

First service center wanted $300 to do this. It took calling another half dozen to find sometime that was willing to do this, but I don't know if they really know what they are doing. They are cheap though.

Can you take a picture of, or write out the fields seen on the first screen in BIOS ? That way I know we're on the same page as far as what may be needed.

hmm, you have me confused as well. I replace out M/B's weekly at work and when I ran HW Maint floppy disk, the only things I update are the UUID and the System Unit Serial #.

From my experience, the System Board serial # is already filled in, and nothing I have ever needed to touch/change/alter. Now if this particular info is used for anything, I guess I don't know for sure.

I would not worry about the systemboard serial number. If System update works the battle has been won.

I just wish I knew where it came from. I am ok with the model number I picked. It seems like the best match. The T60's with built-in Wireless N seemed to have a different chipset ("P" version).
