X41 to the 510

I'm probably going to buy a Lenovo 510. Even if I'm successful in cloning the hard drive in my x41...am I right in assuming it would not work in the 510...if for no other reason...all the drivers for the mobo, video, etc. on the 510 would be different? I dread having to spend several weeks reinstalling everything, setting up all my shortcuts, icons, macros and wordperfect settings..etc....and communicating with all the companies I've bought software from in the past 4 years...trying to convince them I'm not trying to rip them off.

Your X41 probably ran XP-Pro (32-bit).
The new 510 will almost certainly come with W7 (64-bit).

Almost your only option (apart from a fresh install), is to get an update to Windows 7, which you need to run in the X41.
You must also realize that you can only use a 32-bit version of W7-upgrade.
Then you can transfer the X41-HD to the 510 and run System Update again.
It will most likely work, but you will take all the quirks from XP with you, and you'll have 'only' a 32-bit OS.

Of course you can sill run XP-Pro on the 510, but what a waste that would be...

When I bought my T510 to replace my T43 I used System Migration Assistant to transfer things from Win XP to Win 7. It worked a treat!

When you say "system migration assistant"...is that part of the system on the 510 or the t43? In either event....what does it migrate?

System Migration Assistant (SMA) is available to download from Lenovo's website. http://www.pc.ibm.com/us/think/thinkvan ... migration/
You' might need different versions for Win XP and Win 7. It is free for IBM/Lenovo systems.

IIRC, once you have SMA installed on both machines you link them using an ethernet cable. Then start SMA on both and follow the instructions to transfer programs and data across from the X41 to the T510.

I first used SMA years ago to transfer everything from an R40e to my old T43. When I bought my T510 I found out that it could be used to transfer from XP to Win 7, so I used it again. 8)

There is no upgrade path from XP to Windows 7.

SMA allows migration from XP to Win 7.

I went into SMA and looked in the help section. It has a table, which I have saved as a file, which shows the allowable paths. Now all I have to do is find a way to get the table to show here! :?

You are referring to migrating settings. I am referring to upgrading the entire operating system.

Funnily enough an upgrade from Windows 2000 seems to be an option!
At least it's not mentioned as NOT possible!

If upgrading the entire operating system is out of the question, isn't it easier to migrate?

As Edward de Bono said, "You can't move a hole by digging it deeper." So thinking laterally might move the problem. That is what SMA is all about. :)

Don't really care what the OP does. I was replying to RBS's comment "Almost your only option (apart from a fresh install), is to get an update to Windows 7, which you need to run in the X41". I simply stated there is no upgrade path to W7 from XP (which is what is running in the X41 today), and that is a true statement.
