VLC and Thinkpad volume buttons

Hello.
When I play media through VLC, the volume buttons on my T500 will raise/lower the volume within the program which results in distortion at higher levels.
One workaround is that I can use the volume buttons while VLC is playing and the focus is elsewhere like on my web browser. However, this is a bit of a nuisance when I'm watching videos in full screen.
So, is there a way to prevent the volume buttons from affecting the VLC internal volume? So far, I've only observed this behavior with VLC.
To my recollection, I didn't have this happening on my T60p.
Thanks.
