New Thinpad X201 Tablet: Boot to external USB drive?

#1 Post by a_gunslinger » Thu Mar 24, 2011 7:38 pm

USB CD drive is listed in the BIOS startup device order but I cant get it to boot to a sik in the samsung external USB drive.

I use Acronis True Image all the time and boot to the True Image CD to make image backups. However, cant get it to boot to the CD using an external USB CD drive. Since USB CD drive is listed as a bootable option int he boot priority list I assume its boot capable.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Welcome to the Forum!
I use an external USB DVD drive occasionally to boot True Image from CD with R60 and R52 and have never had a problem. Have you tried the setup with another computer successfully? I can only think of a couple of reasons for failure. Does the drive have a power source/cable in addition to the USB data cable? If it does and you aren't using it, perhaps the drive needs more juice (although that doesn't seem likely). Is it possible the disk is bad? Does the drive work otherwise, i.e. once booted normally, does the ThinkPad see and access the drive?

Thanks for the reply. It actually is a non-powered external usb drive. The TI disk does work on other systems, I will check to see the non-powred USB drive works on other systems. Good idea.
