ATI Catalyst Mobility install issues - T60 w/ Win 7 32-bit

#1 Post by Vripper » Wed Mar 30, 2011 2:16 am

Hey there, fellow TPers, sorry if this question has already been asked, but I couldn't find any relevant info for the past hour.

I have a T60 with an x1300 ATI graphics card.
I installed a new SSD HD and just installed Win 7.
I installed the ATI drivers for my machine from Lenovo's website, but they didn't seem to install correctly, and uninstalled them.

The ATI Catalyst Mobility software from the ATI couldn't be downloaded either. I got the following message:

"ATI Catalyst Mobility cannot be downloaded due to incompatible hardware/software on your computer.

You computer does not contain a proper graphics adapter."

It seems like installing a legacy or a modded graphics driver is what I need.

Can someone point me in the right direction?

On a side note, the SSD is fast!

Try installing the Thinkvantage System Update 4.0 software and let it decide what video driver to install for you.

I did use the Thinkvantage System Update, but strangely enough, it did not install Catalyst like it has in the past.

i've not had tvsu offer me any video driver (or related) packages for my t60p running win7.

when i installed the os, i let windows update provide the ati driver. it didn't contain/install the catalyst package, but that doesn't bother me much. the machine is rock stable.

Catalyst is not required. I usually let ThinkVantage Update 4.0 do it's thing...then update Windows several times until all the correct Windows 7 drivers install including the video driver. And yes...it will run rock solid.

^^^
i generally use tvsu or the driver matrices for hardware support before i turn to windows update. in the case of ati drivers for the v5200 in the t60p, i had little choice.

Thanks for the input, everyone.

I installed Windows Updates first, then installed TVSU.

I'm gonna reformat and re-install W7, and try TVSU first, followed by Windows Update.

I'll give the update afterwards.

I reinstalled Win7, installed all Thinkpad Updates, then installed all windows updates.
It's still not showing aero settings when I alt-tab. I'm not getting the 3D view.

Anyone have any ideas how to turn on hardware acceleration?

Yes, an Aero Theme was definitely selected.
I used to get the 3D alt-tab, but it went away after I started using the SSD.

How many times did you check for Windows updates? Did you use all the updates? Some people think to only install critical updates. It requires a couple checks minimum.

I checked for Windows Updates at least 6 times. I'm pretty sure I got all of them.
According to TVTU and Windows Update, there is nothing left to install.

if you check device manager, what driver version do you have installed for your display adapter?

It's version 8.561.0.0, published on 12/1/2008.

exactly the driver i've got.

are you pressing alt+tab or windows key+tab? the latter works for aero-flip 3d, at least for me.

Aero-flip 3d is working with Windows key+tab.

Thanks for confirming that.

I was kinda freaked out when I ran Windows Experience Index and only got a 2.0 for the graphics card the first time. It ran a 3.6 the second time around.

glad you got it working. :thumbs-UP:

for reference, my wei only shows 4.4 for both graphics indexes with the v5200 in my t60p.
