Hello,
I am having a problem with my Think pad and maybe someone can help me please. I write long documents that i need to at times sit back and review. While i am not typing and just reading, my Think pad goes into standby mode and shuts off, it does this like clockwork every 5 min. its very frustrating. You also can't undo standby by touching a key or touching the mouse, in order to undo standby, i have to shut the lid and open it again. i have been doing this for months, shut the lid and open it shut, open, shut, open, it will drive you crazy and it is very frustrating. I have been all around and through the control panel and put all the settings on 'never ' but this doesnt help, it still shuts off every 5 min when i am not typing. how can i fix this? I have windows 2000 and my thinkpad is # 9547 . Is there a password in the mother board? what can i do? thank you. signed very frustrated. :(

Try fixing it here:

Start -> Control Settings -> ThinkPad Configuration -> Power Settings -> Power Schemes

If you can't get to the Power Schemes through that path, let us know.

What Nonny said.

Also, I'm able to bring my Thinkpad out of sleep (or hibernate) by briefly (no more than a second or two) depressing the power button. On my model, at least, it's not necessary to close and reopen the lid.

First, the FN button will bring a thinkpad out of suspend, second, there are power saving features in the bios, (you did say you had it set to never) Also, check the settings in thinkpad utilities and fuel gauge.
