Screen comparison 1080p vs flexview

#1 Post by Hovercraft work! » Fri Apr 22, 2011 12:19 am

I'm very curious, since I have very limited time and access to today's machines:

How do the new 1080p Thinkpad screens compare with the older Thinkpad IPS flexview screens?? I have not had or seen a 1080p screen in Thinkpad form factor to compare with my UXGA T60p flexview.

Thanks.
T60p 2623DDU, purchased in 2006 July, still humming along. Love it, though a *bit* slow by today's standard. Flexview UXGA is color perfect, a bit underlit. Still beautiful, after all these years.

They're brighter, but have worse viewing angles.

I can believe it. I just came back from a foray into the local "computer city", here in Seoul. Saw a newish (year old model) laptop with 1080p and it wasn't as nice as my flexview.

Plus, my son just got a new T410 w/ the 800p screen and it's definitely brighter than my flex, but the color, contrast, and viewing angles .... well, no comparison.

Can I transplant my flexview onto a new W520???

How do you intend to transplant a screen into a chassis that's of different size and shape?
Current: X220 4291-4BG, T410 2537-R46, T60 1952-F76, T60 2007-QPG, T42 2373-F7G
Collectibles: T430s (IPS FHD + Classic Keyboard), X32 (IPS Screen)

It does not work as the size is different, and the connectors. There are no flexview (IPS) panels known for the a T and W series, only the X series can use flexview (IPS and VA) panels.

Sorry, I left out the  and the :thumbs-UP: (for the flex) and the

I can dream, can't I??

That's great, that at least one member of the Think family still has a flex available. I wonder why flex is not available to more of the Thinkpad line?? Any ideas?

To be honest I haven't seen enough of the 1080p screens in action to make a valid comparison. All I know is that my flex is the best screen I've ever seen to date.

In checking the X-series, I see only two models currently offered, and the best display is a "12.5 inch Premium HD 1366x768". Is that an IPS panel??? [EDIT] OK, I see now that there is an option for a 300 nit IPS panel. Gee, I didn't know they made IPS in 1366x768!!

I'd like to ask one more time: can anyone describe the visual difference(s) between the newer 1080p 95% gamut displays on Thinkpads and the older UXGA (1600x1200) Flexview screen, like the one on my T60p 2623ddu? Is the viewing angle the only difference? How much "worse" is the viewing angle on the newer, non-IPS displays?? Any other visual differences?? Is power consumption of the latest IPS similar to the latest high-res non-IPS Thinkpad screens, or does it draw a lot more juice??

Screen quality makes a big difference to me, more important than other performance factors, and I don't have much opportunity to shop around looking at various latest screen types. I'd even consider going to an X220 type machine over a W520 if the screen quality of the X-machine is that much better.

I don't know if this helps you much, but I have a FHD screen on a W520 sitting next to an IPS screen in the 24" form of a Dell U2410 monitor (set to Adobe RGB preset mode). My sense is that, after calibration (I got the built-in color sensor), the FHD is definitely in the ballpark in terms of color accuracy (maybe a little green vs. the Dell being a little red), but still a little too saturated. Also, it doesn't have quite as much dynamic range/contrast.

I perceive it to be a "better" quality screen. Not something you could use instead of a press check, certainly, but much much better than the screen I had in my T61p. I don't find the viewing angle on the FHD to be an issue at all.

Did your T61p have flexview IPS? If so, are you saying that your W520's FHD screen is "better" than your old T60p IPS??

No T61p had Flexview IPS, unless it's a modded T60p 15" chassis with T61p components.

Looking at the context, I am pretty sure "better" meant "better than the average TN".

Sorry for the ambiguity, Hovercraft; pianowizard got what I meant. The definitely-not-flexview screen I had in my T61p (FRU 42T0423... the WSXGA+) was possibly the worst screen I've ever owned... unless you want to count the Macintosh Duo 210's 640x400 passive LCD 4-bit (16-gray) screen. That was worse. Too tiny and the cursor always submarined.

Lol, I see, thanks.

So, going back to the FHD on your W520 vs the UltraSharp, would you say the FHD is as "accurate" in color and form representation as the IPS UltraSharp? I trying to get a fix on the quality of the FHD used in the W520/Thinkpad stations -- unknowns to me -- relative to my well-known IPS flexview T60p.

Sorry for the slow reply. In a word, "no." The FHD screen does not appear as accurate as the Dell 2410. Dell using its Adobe RGB preset, FHD calibrated to D6500, gamma 2.0 or 2.2 depending on my mood. There are still a few oversaturated ranges. But it's generally more than acceptable.
