Did you remember to connect the laptop to the telephone outlet? (With a small telephone cable?)

Modems can be tricky to troubleshoot. What steps have you taken so far to isolate the problem? Have you tried removing and reinstalling the modem from device manager, re installing the driver etc. Are you able to query the modem and get a valid response back using the Diagnostics tab on the modem properties sheet? Are you using the same RJ-11 (phone) cable with both modems, could be faulty. Could be a com port conflict, any other serial devices connected, what com port is the modem showing as being attached to?
Just some areas to look at to help isolate the problem.

There's a big door on the bottom of your machine that hides your modem card. Depending on your machine, you might have a miniPCI, or a CDC modem card. Either way, there's a red and black wire with a little white connector on it that must be plugged in to your modem card. If that's unplugged -- no dial tone.

Ya I have tried everything I can think of. I get a good query in device manger.. I was wondering where those wires off the modem go.. Do they attached to board? I have a dock for it and it doesn't get a dail tone when plugged in there also... I'm I looking @ a mother board problem?
