#1 Post by johng123 » Thu Jul 21, 2011 9:21 am

I broke the screen on my 15.4" Lenovo R61. Can someone tell me what part i need to buy and how to install it? How difficult is it to replace the screen? Thanks so much

Do you have the WXGA or WSXGA+ LCD?

Do you want to stick with it or bump up to WSXGA+?

You can of course buy the part directly from Lenovo, but it will be expensive. ebay is another good option as is the marketplace forum here. You can post to see if anyone has an extra they'd part with.

If you do go with the WSXGA+, I'd suggest getting the LG. There's one here on eBay that looks legit, but I have no knowledge of the seller. If you want to stick with WXGA, the part numbers are:

Samsung 42T0323
LG-Philips 42T0331
LG-Philips 42T0421
AUO 42T0333

They're probably available on ebay too. I'd just make sure you get a genuine part as opposed to a compatible.

Hit the training and support site. It has videos showing how to assemble and disassemble your screen. Replacing the screen is a bit time consuming, but it's not rocket science. Good Luck.

OK, so I bought a "top assembly" from here:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... K:MEWAX:IT

Is it easier to install a "top assembly" than a panel?

The seller said:

"It is VERY IMPORTANT that your laptops BIOS setup program be updated to the most recent version BEFORE installing your replacement parts."

How do I do this? I'm using Ubuntu 10.10.

Thanks so much for your help.

Its a lot easier to replace the top assembly, all you need to do is get it off, which while I am not 100% sure how you do that with the 15.4", I do know that it is a lot eaiser than swapping the panel.

I don't think the bios version matters, you are getting a genuine part, not a newer non-oem part.

Lenovo makes a bootable BIOS CD, which I believe is not OS dependent. Perhaps someone can correct me if I'm wrong? You can download it here.
