Installing new DVD drive

#1 Post by NipplesTheCat » Sat Apr 02, 2005 6:12 am

So I just got my first new used thinkpad yesterday and I am loving it so far. It came with a toshiba DVD rom that i have in right now and am currently playing a dvd on. The problem is that it doesnt have a face on it like the cd rom had. It just has a plate one the front that says for transportation purposes only. Am I supposed to take the front off of the cd rom drive as I did with the rails? If so then how do i get it off without breaking it? Thanks.

Leave the faceplate on the Cd drive. The DVD drive was most likely from a 3rd party vendor who did the front differently than IBM.

Yeah, this is a common thing with aftermarket and non-oem parts. It could also be a drive from another laptop that was modified to fit in the ThinkPad.

Nipples...see if you can find any part number on the drive in question and post it here. BTW, which Thinkpad are you trying to use this with? Actually, more than that, I need to know what type of bay you're trying to get this to fit.....Ultrabay, Ultrabay2000, Utrabay Slim, etc.

I think that with more specific info, we might be able to help you with an alternative that would work for your Thinkpad.

What brand is the old CD drive, there should be a sticker on the bottom. If it is the same brand there is a chance the faceplate will interchange.

Ah, the SD-C2502! If others can't help you, I found this,
( http://www.ultradrives.com/product_info ... cts_id/201 ) but if it's for the Ultrabay2000, then you'll have to cut part of the faceplate...not really any big deal...done it to several.

But as far as this drive goes, it has a very good reputation and is very easily RPC-1 (Region-Free) upgradable. Go here to see your options:
