I would like to replace the hard drive on my R40 (2681) and need to know what is the recommended practice for transferring software, including pre-installed/Ibm hidden data. Is it possible to put the new drive in a USB enclosure and make a disk image with xxcopy or similar? Are there complications, or anything else I need to be aware of?
Thanks for any help. I don't have a recovery disk.

I've done several hdd swaps with Norton Ghost 2003 that way without any problems.

Check out Acronis True Image 8. It is supposed to be easier to use than Ghost.

You may also consider an 2nd hdrive adapter(ultrabay). It is 45 bucks direct from ibm shipped and comes with software very similar to acronis. Then you can always use your 2nd hdrive at full speed, if desired.

just make a HD image with Acronis or Ghost if you want all software.
If just the preloaded, order some recovery CD's from IBM
