Original IBM CD Recording Software?

#1 Post by NCmountainman » Thu Apr 07, 2005 2:19 am

:?: I purchased my T42 a little over a month ago from an individual online. He was running linux, and had erased everything on the computer, which was original to it. I have downloaded all the software available through IBM's website, but I can't download the original CD recording software, the site only offers updates to that software. My question is how can I get the original software, and what could I be missing(software) on my thinkpad, that was installed when the laptop was shipped, and how do I go about recovering all of this?
Thanks,
Dan

You would be missing at least the CD recording software and the DVD player. Norton Anti-Virus also comes in the factory load.

The first thing to check is whether the hidden partition is still in place, which is a factory restore partition.

When booting, press the blue Access IBM button and see if the Recover Factory Settings (or called something like that) is available and works. If not and you want to restore the factory load, call IBM, tell them your hard drive crashed and you need a copy of the Restore Disks. You may or may not get charged.

Thanks, I'll try restoring the factory settings right now, if not I'll give them a call. Thanks for the help and the quick reply!

ok guys, I just received the Rescue and Recovery CD, as well as 7 Product Recovery CDs.(IBM had them to me in less than 24hrs!) The instructions read that during the recovery process, all data on all partitions of the hard disk will be deleted. Does this mean that I will lose Windows XP Pro? The person I purchased the thinkpad from had reinstalled it before sending it to me, but never sent me the CD itself. I basically just want the CD recording/DVD software reinstalled on my thinkpad without losing everything else on it, but I don't know how to go about doing this. Any info for this computer rookie would be greatly appreciated!

I think Windows is a part of those 7 recovery cds, in another word, once u go through the whole recovery process, you should have Windows along with all the other programs IBM preinstalled your T42 with

The CD recording software from IBM is not worth it!!

Get Nero Burning ROM and save yourself some heartache!

I agree that the IBM recording software is not worth it. But if the seller installed XP for you, I'd be willing to bet that the seller did not properly install of the device drivers.

Do a full install. Then update Windows and the drivers.

Are you talking about CD/DVD drivers? If so, there are none. All Thinkpads use original Windows drivers for these. There are however "firmware" upgrades for some of these drives on the IBM site. Whether CD/DVD drives work, however is not dependant on whether or not "drivers" for them have been installed or not.

Personally I like RecordNow which is the software that comes on Thinkpad for recording both CD's and DVD's, but I do agree that the version of RecordNow that comes standard on Thinkpads is not very good.

Ok new dilema(sp?) here. After reinstalling everything using the recovery CD's, I now only have windows XP instead of XP Pro. Ok, ok, it's not a dilema but, was this a mistake made by the support at IBM, in sending me the wrong recovery disks, or should I just live with windows XP?

T42s ship with XP SP2 preloaded. Microsoft in their "wisdom", removed the "Professional" and "Home" labels from XP with SP2.

When you received your machine, XP had been reinstalled by the previous user (if I remember correctly) - it evidently didn't have SP2 installed and therefore still showed "Professional" on boot. Using the recovery cds has reinstalled the preload version of XP Pro - with SP2 preinstalled. There was no mistake on IBM's part.

Just to completely ease your mind - go to Start-> Run and type "winver" (without "") and it will show that it is indeed Windows XP Pro.
