T41 TFT fail?

#1 Post by jiopsi » Sun Oct 23, 2011 7:01 pm

I have T41, it worked fine until I plugged it with external monitor, then the screen buzzed or oscillated short time, and now it's stays completely blank.

I don't think it's motherboard solder problem, as I had that kind of T41, and it worked when I pushed southbridge or GPU, and this doesn't. The fans work, power lights, but the screen is blank.

Anyone have suggestions, what's the problem?

Actually harddrive light also doesn't flicker, so it don't probably boot up.

EDIT: removed both memories, did beep, but then when I reinstalled memories it then booted up normally? Seems to be working now.

EDIT2: so it was the other memory module which was faulty, haven't had one of these before when the RAM breaks in use.

It came back, it worked about 20min then in the screen everything slighty buzzed short time and computer halted. Could this be overheating problem? Changed thermalpaste and cleaned fan, also installed NHC and undervolted. Lets see if it helps.

Tested furthermore, it isn't RAM. And had new symptom, the picture in TFT corrupted completely, with horizontal lines which flickered everywhere.

Buzzing is usually associated with a bad inverter, but that ailment doesn't produce a corrupted image...

Does inverter affect external picture?

No.

If it throws a short towards the board, though...it might do damage...

Does the inverter problem halt the computer? Because every time when it happens, laptop also halts, and I have to boot again. When the laptop is cool, it works about 0~20min, but warm it may not even start.

Sounds more like a combination of failing GPU and Southbridge.
Remove keyboard, KB bezel and the wifi card.
Under it you will find a big Intel chip (Southbridge or SB).
Reconnect keyboard.
Press on any corner of the SB, keep the pressure and try to boot. Try different corners.
If it now boots, your SB needs to be reballed.

I dont think it is, because pressing SB doesn't affect anything.

I removed the SSD (Kingspec) from the laptop, and went to BIOS, and it works pretty much perfectly there, uptime now 2 hours and haven't halted. I wonder if there is something wrong with the SSD or the XP installation.

If the only difference between working and not-working is the Kingspec SSD, I'd say it's a faulty SSD.
Does it still work OK with your 'old' hard disk?

I will test another (HDD) this weekend.
