T42 lost sound
T42 lost sound
Hope one of you has a "miracle" cure... I had to reload the OS on my T42 and now there is no sound. When it turns on and off and the 4-note Windows sound should play, there are only 2 clicks. No sounds from CD, DVD, or even Youtube. All drivers are correctly loaded - all settings properly set - actual CD player tested with known working CD from another machine - in other words, everything is right, it just won't work.
Two odd things that occur - 1) when PC Doctor sound diagnostics runs, the sound is fine and 2) when booted from Ubuntu disc the sound is perfect... So, this has to be something in Windows (running XP Pro Service Pack3 with all current updates), or does it ?!?
Thanks for any suggestions!

Re: T42 lost sound
After installing the driver, you must go into C>Drivers>Win>Audio and run the setup file from there.

Re: T42 lost sound
Hi ajkula66 - set up was successful... let me be more specific to the problem... i have done dozens of these and never any problems... diagnostics show no trouble, device manager shows that all drivers are properly loaded and setup and should work... as i said in the initial post, sound works fine when using PC Doctor diagnostics, showing not trouble... audio is also fine when unit is booted from Ubuntu disc... only from the "normal" Windows driven situation does it not work, yielding only a couple of clicks when audio should appear... perplexing... thanks for the response...

Re: T42 lost sound
Thanks for the link RBS, will give it a shot and see what happens...
Re: T42 lost sound
Thanks for the link RBS, but it didn't do the trick. The problem seems to possibly lie in the audio driver, although the Device Manager states it is recognized and operating properly. When using an Unknown Devices program, it shows that there are no Unknown Devices (which leads to the same items which are listed on the Device Manager as missing)... however, when it is examined more closely on the Audio Driver rather than showing the driver, as it should, it lists "Unable to Detect"... anyone have any suggestions on these conflicting statements? open to suggestions... thanks all...

Re: T42 lost sound
Go back in Device Manager, then rightclick on the Audio entry and Delete it.
Reboot and new hardware should be found and automatically installed by Windows.
Hope that helps.
PS: make sure you have not pressed the "Sound Off" button.

Re: T42 lost sound
have you tried looking in the volume control panel to see if anything is muted or missing?

Re: T42 lost sound
thanks for the suggestions guys... checked the "sound off" button, in fact tried 3 other keyboards from known working machines just to make sure i didn't have a non-functioning keyboard... all settings correct... tried delete and reboot with no luck... this is maddening... went as far as loading ubuntu earlier this evening, audio is flawless there... back to xp and nothing doing... perhaps i need a witch doctor... thanks for the help all...
Re: T42 lost sound
difficult to explain this one because i don't have XP anymore, but didn't mean the audio controls on keyboard. The software settings in XP itself are maddening. Once you have installed the drivers and if an error occurs in the registry, no matter how mant times you install and uninstall the software, the error will remain. The fact that the audio test works, tells me that XP is using ( or trying to use!!) another type of audio sytem. there are tons of examples here. Maybe the speaker settings are incorrect in XP, maybe it is trying to use a spdif interface by default etc etc This happened to me on a number of occasions with different machines and i had to reinstall windows on more than 1 occasion. I even bought my first thinkpad (a 380z) for 99p because the sound didn't work in XP. I re-installed it and it worked!!mnowell69 wrote:have you tried looking in the volume control panel to see if anything is muted or missing?
