Help! T30 Insufficient memory to run setup.

#1 Post by MadeInJapan » Thu Apr 07, 2005 10:17 pm

Why this is happening I have no clue. I have 1Gig of memory and plenty of HDD space left (about 27gigs). I am trying to install a program called VADIS which is a Volvo specific diagnostic software written for Windows2000 and WindowsXP. I tried to install this program on my desktop Window2000 computer and got this message: _INS5576._MP Application Error Application failed to initialize properly (0x0000005) Click OK to terminate. My Windows2000 (SP4) computer has been very stable and I've never seen this error before. On the same installation on my T30 running WinXP Pro (SP2), at about the same place I get this error: Insufficient memory to run setup. Close all other applications to make more memory available and try to run setup again Error 111.

I have disable all other applications including my antivirus...I have increase, decreased, disabled my page file...heck, I've even tried to install this program in safe mode, but nothing. I paid a lot of money for this program and want to get it to work.

Any suggestions what's going on and what I can do?

If that's the same VADIS that Ford inerited along with the Volvo, it's neither new nor written forW2K/XP. Probably had a coat of paint put on it and rolled out the door again.

It's been around since the days of WFW3.11 and I'll bet it's looking for a DOS HIMEM sector!

Ergo, not enough memory error.

If that is the situation, see if you can run this program in Windows 98, and if so, you may wish to consider VMware and a Windows 98 virtual machine to run the program. I have done this for clients with other legacy programs. ... JD Hurst

No, this disc was made in Dec. 2004...exclusively for Win2000 or WinXP....

The software comes originally from Sweden (you can tell by the gramatical errors in the Readme files)...Ford is behind the times compared to this stuff. If Ford improves it's because of Volvo, IMHO. I do hate some of the degredation that's been done to Volvo due to Ford's influence....but if you've never owned a Volvo, I say you have no idea what you're talking about. I'm on my third one now and wouldn't drive anything else...the comfort and safety is bar none.

I have an 89 Volvo 240 sedan with over 400,000 Km on it and an 88 Volvo 240 wagon with about 350,000 Km on it. I think the sedan's time may be coming near. ... JDH

It might have been re-compiled to run under W2K or XP, but I doubt there's a lot of difference between it and the copy I've got lying around here somewhere that I used to run under W98.

And your POS T5HP couldn't keep up with my old EuroSpec 9000T Aero if it was launched from a slingshot! :P

Nice! JDHurst....Very funny (I was laughing my A$$ off) JHEM....but about the Thinkpad...maybe I will try this as Win98, but VADIS is all the time updating...they come out with 4 or 5 new versions each year...to include the newer models and latest recalls, etc. I doubt this is the same as one that used to run on Win98....

Anyway, now, I recall that within WinXP there is a way to make something run in simulated Windows98. Can you do this win an installation of a disc? I've been told that this disc has several parts to it and therefore it's not just one EXE file that takes off when you begin installation...one instal is linked to another, then another....therefore, how do I make the entire disc's programs instal?

On a side note, I read somewhere that this program might not work if over 256MB of memory (getting 111 Error) and so I took my 2 sticks of 512MB each out and put back in a stick of 256MB to try again and the same thing happened...I tried this in safe mode too but to no avail.

Any suggestions are very very appreciated.

It's not always required to use VMWare if something doesn't work :)
Microsoft's own Windows Application Compatibility Toolkit to the resque!
I've used it with programs that have poor memory compatibility and it saved the day, and without any running programs! :)
[It generates a database file which you install, then every time you run your program, it applies the necessary fixes.]

I found it, downloaded it and now trying to figure it out. You said that it sets up the correct parameters when you try to run programs...actually I'm not there yet...I'm trying to "setup" a program (that includes several sub-programs) before I can run it...does this help in installing a program or does it have to be installed first?

Well actually it doesn't do anything by itself, you've got to create a new fix for every program.
There are some fast configuration methods such as Windows 98 compatibility etc that you may also want to try.
It's power comes from advanced settings, and a couple of hundred of those, which probably help more if you know about programming.

But at first you may want to try the OP system comp. fixes, (98/etc), then perhaps search the web, maybe there are other people proposing such fixes.

Okay thanks....seems like I'm on a "journey" with this one. It may or may not be worth the effort. It is possible that the original Vadis disc I received is defective and so I'm being sent another one. I think I will patiently wait for that to arrive before trying further.

Hi David,

Some programs just don't work on all computers. You could try running it in compatibility mode... I'm guessing something in that software is conflicting w/ the T30. It probably works on 99% of computers out there but hangs up on the T30 or that T30 for some reason. It could be a TP specific driver or just a piece of the hardware. If you fiddle around for a long time you may be able to come up w/ a workaround but maybe not- You're very knowledgeable and I’m sure you're doing everything correctly... I can always try it on a similar T30 here...

I have a desktop here that refuses to run Stamps.Com software- the reps think it works on all systems but I talked w/ a programmer and it is a known issue. It works on most computers but does crash on 2% of computers. They say there is no workaround and I have to use it on a different computer.

Thanks Len for being thoughtful and helpful as you always are. I tried the software on my desktop too, but I need it portable...out near my car when I'm working on it....

Like I said, I'm waiting for a replacement disc which is suppose to be here any day. I'll try it and post back.

Oh, by the way, I really appreciate you not making silly remarks about owning a Volvo...I waited a year to finally find and buy the car I've wanted for years.

Sorry Dave, but my SIL drives the same T5HP so it's rather an automatic response!

Got the software to finally install! It was a glitch in the software that didn't allow all of the files to install. It was a simple fix though, so I'm happy now. I can finally use the disc to diagnose, see how to do procedures and get part numbers for both mine and my wife's Volvos.
