Looking to remove good HDD into another T43

#1 Post by Think43p » Fri Dec 02, 2011 6:22 pm

Hi,

I currently have a used T43p 14" (T2668GEU) that I got from IBM's certified used site back in April 2008 and since about 2009 its been freezing almost twice daily.

In 2010, I put new in a new 100Gb HD to upgrade from the 60Gb that came with it but because of the constant freezing I want to remove the HDD and put it into another used IBM.

Do the T43s have the same freezing problem like the T43p that I currently have? any specific model that would be potentially 'safe' from the freezing problem in the T43/T43p arena?

It really depends on the cause of the freezing.

If the machine is freezing at IBM splash screen, that's most likely a SouthBridge problem, and no T4x unit is safe in that respect.

Could you tell us a bit more about the symptoms that your ThinkPad is exhibiting?

Your machine being a 14.1" with ATI FireGL, the cause of your machine locking up is not freezing but overheating!
Remove keyboard and KB bezel, and then the CPU cooler; gently pry the cooler part from over the GPU.
Clean off all the old gunk from CPU and cooler with e.g. Isopropyl Alcohol, using a lint-free cloth.
Use a can of compressed air to clean out the fan and the fan-area of the motherboard. Hold the fan blades with e.g. a toothpick, to stop them from over-revving.
Apply a rice corn size amount of Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste, spread evenly using e.g. an old credit card.
Reassemble laptop.
Then every month or so, remove just the keyboard, hold the fan blades and blow out the dust from the fan.
That should stop your freezing/overheating.

As much as I would want to agree with you, my laptop just froze at 53 deg C on TPFC when I opened a news website (not video news this time though)

I believe its got to do with the SB problem but could anyone confirm if it could be that or hopefully anything else unles TPFCs temperature can be ignored.

Southbridge (and GPU) problems are caused by the constant On/Off over the years, which causes detrimental heating/cooling cycles.
The T4x was built during the time when motherboard manufacturers had to switch from leaded to unleaded solder (RoHS initiative). Not everybody got it right from the beginning (unfortunately).
If you'd let your T4x run 24/7/365 though, and don't move it around, it would probably last for 10-20 years.
