Hot as hell
Hot as hell
My charging cable for my T42p gets hotter than hell after its been plugged in for an hour or so. Is this normal? When I say hot, I mean real hot. You can hold it but you wouldnt want to hold it for very long. I am not talking about the cord, just the box in the middle.
Anyone else experiencing this?
Should I call IBM and get a new one or should I just use it to keep my coffee hot? I just dont want it to one day catch my house on fire.
Cheers,

Could you post the FRU number of your unit? It should be on the sticker on the bottom of the AC adapter.
I've got a FRU 08K8209. It's a revision E model. It gets pretty warm, but not to the point where I can't hold it for extended periods of time.
If you are really concerned about it, call IBM. Better to be safe than cause a fire!

My power brick also gets super hot after using for 1 hour and beyond. The FRU is 08K8203...
It gets hot to the point that I can't hold my touch on it. (Or maybe I have sensitive hands? ) Definitely not the toasty warm kind that is normal with other electrical appliance bricks. Is it normal? I read the article on the recalling of power bricks by IBM, but my FRU wasn't part of it...

I have/had the same problem but only when the adapter is charging the battery for a long period of time. Say perhaps an hour or more. It gets hot especially when your battery is charging from a complete/near-complete discharged state and yes, it gets THAT hot. I wouldn't really worry too much about it though.

I have an 08K8205 and it gets VERY hot as well. Also irks me that the cord doesn't seem to plug into the brick very solidly. Anyone know the operating specs (temperature range) on this part? Just estimating wildly ... I'd say mine was abou 110, 115 degrees right now.

I've just had my 15" svga+ T42 for a couple of weeks and had only used the power source that came with the mini dock.
This topic led me to check small power source in case I had a problem.
The standard power source that came with the laptop is rated at 4.5A and the black box weighs about 225g. Charging up from 20% during light use, it gets quite warm in a cool room but not alarmingly so. I've not tried it while simultaneously charging and running the processor and drives hard.
The power source that came with the mini dock is rated at 7.5A. The black box weighs weighs about 550 g and is more than twice the size. It has always been cool when I've checked it. I think it is a much heavier duty unit and the combination of this at the desk for regular use with the small one packed ready for travel seems ideal for my purposes.
Both seem to be silent in use.

I have six 72W IBM power bricks from varying eras (all are the 16V/4.5A compatible with the T-series) and none of them gets more than "noticeably warm" when plugged in. I haven't tested the temperature when charging the battery yet - I imagine it would be somewhat warmer then.
But if it's so hot that you can't continuously hold it due to pain or fear of burns, I'd wager that is definitely not normal!
