Replacing HDD on a T43

#1 Post by sonoma » Sun Apr 10, 2005 7:14 am

I'd like to replace my current 40GB 5400rpm hard drive with a 80 or 100GB. However, I'd like to avoid reinstalling and re-building my OS from scratch if possible. What would be the best way of making some kind of image of the current drive then just restore or replicate the image to the new drive?
Can IBM's Rescue and Recovery create an image on the same drive (my current) so that I can burn the image onto a CD/DVD? If this was possible, I can then take out the old drive, replace it with a new one, then restore the image, right?
FYI I don't have any external USB drive or secondary hard drive of some sort. With Symantec's Ghost it is not possible to create an image of a drive onto itself, it requires another partition or drive. I'm not sure how IBM's R&R works. My current drive does not have any secondary or logical partitions either. Can I create my current drive's image without need to buy another USB drive or without need to create any separate partition?
Please give me some feedback. A big thank you in advance.

You can use Ghost to create an image onto CDs...

I had a problem creating images with both the most recent version of Ghost and also with an older version of Acronis True Image. I am not sure where exactly the problem lies but I believe it has to do with the security features I enabled on my T43. I have used Ghost and Acronis on many computers in the past and never had a problem. In the end I used IBM's included backup software. It is not quite as nice as Acronis and it doesn't offer the file compression that the other utilities do but it did the job. All you need is to open Rescue and Recovery, choose to backup all files, and then choose where to backup to. I used a usb hard drive to capture the files including a boot file, put the new drive in my T43, booted from usb, clicked to restore files and I was done.
