Help choosing replacement keyboard for T42

#1 Post by twister6 » Sun Dec 11, 2011 11:29 pm

Will be sending my T400s for repair, so had to dust off my "ancient" T42. Noticed a number of keys not as responsive (air dusted keyboard, its not food crumbs :)). So, I took a look on ebay and see a number of replacement choices. Is there a specific part number to look for? I saw one "39T0550, 39T0581" and the other one "13N9926 13N9957", each for $19. Than, there was also "13N9988, 39T0519, KYT4" for $25. Does it matter which one? ... OT, I miss IPS screen :(

Well, the way to go would be to pull out your old keyboard and post the FRU here, so we know what to advise you...

There were 3 different manufacturers: Chicony, ALPS and NMB...so if you liked the original keyboard, you may want to stick with the proper replacement.

Just make sure that you verify with the seller that you're getting the *exact* FRU number you're looking for, and not a "compatible" one.

First: As I am sure you know (but nevertheless mentioned for sake of clarity!), there are two differently sized T42 ThinkPad's; 14.1" and 15". The keyboards for these are different, and are not interchangeable (14.1" keyboards have four mounting posts, while 15" keyboards only have three).

Second: As George mentioned, IBM had three different manufacturers (NMB, ALPS and Chicony) producing keyboards for e.g. T42's, and the three keyboards are slightly different; see e.g. the thread T42 Thai (NMB), China (Alps) Keyboard Impressons (long) for a detailed description of the differences. The "different" keyboards for the same sized T42 have different part numbers; these you'll find at Keyboard service parts - ThinkPad T40/p, T41/p, T42/p.

Get the Hardware Maintenance Manual - ThinkPad T40, T40p, T41, T41p, T42, T42p and/or consult the videos at Hardware removal and installation - ThinkPad T40/p, T41/p, T42/p, T43/p and you will easily replace your keyboard. Beware to use the correct screwdriver... otherwise you may cause much damage, and end up with a damaged keyboard permanently mounted on your T42! :(

Consider posting a "WTB" (Want To Buy) or "LF" (Looking For) advertisement in the Marketplace here on the forum. Search the form for more information about keyboard replacement... you're not the first who'll need to do that!
