Asking for advice regarding upgrading my T42 burner

#1 Post by ura » Fri Dec 16, 2011 1:23 am

Hi,

I was hoping to ask for advice about my T42 laptop.

I'm looking to upgrade the burner as it only reads/writes CD-RW and reads DVD- discs.

Can anyone recommend which T-42 compatible burner would be the best one?

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum!

The question you ask has been discussed a few times, and I believe that you will find much useful information in the following threads T42 Upgrade Possibilities and DVD burner upgrade and FS: Ultrabay Slim DVD-RW burners (R5x/T4x/T6x/X4x/X6x/Z6x) and Swapping T60 Multiburner w/ T42 DVD/CDRW.

You may want to consider posting an "LF" (Looking For) or "WTB" (Want To Buy) advertisement in the forum.thinkpads.com Marketplace for offers. Another option may be eBay, but beware (as always) abou items sold there... they may be new and unused or they may be almost dead from age or heavy use...

Any one of these will be good:

(the curved bezel units will sit flush with your notebook bezel. The flat one will stick out a bit, but other than that they are 100% compatible).

This will also be 100% compatible, but somewhat slower:

Current: X220 4291-4BG, T410 2537-R46, T60 1952-F76, T60 2007-QPG, T42 2373-F7G

Retired: X61 7673-V2V, A31p w/ Ultrabay Numpad

Thanks for all of the extremely helpful replies and the warm welcome!

Perhaps I've missed this piece of information, but none of the burners seem to be able to read DVD+ discs (even though they can write those discs). Is there a T42-compatible that can read DVD+ discs?

Thanks again!

Sure; check the specifications for the Lenovo 40Y8622 (same drive as 39T2729) as per Notebook Super Multi-Burner Ultrabay Slim Drive - Overview (these specs most easily found if Googling after 40Y8622 site:Lenovo.com).

Also see the thread Do Double Layer DVD burners exist on T4 series?

I hope all is clear now! :-)

All the linked burners can read DVD+R and DVD+RW.
