Strange crashes after doing updates

#1 Post by Torque » Sun Apr 10, 2005 3:23 pm

Hello Thinkpad forums :D

I was in doubt when placing this thread. It's software related, but the software inflicting the crashes -could- be T-series specific. So.. I placed it here. If it's in the wrong section, then please move it (first moderator to read this) :)

I installed the new software installer a couple of days ago. When I ran it, it downloaded and installed alot of updates. Just about everything. Since then, i've had these strange crashes. Everything just stops. Neither the trackpoint or keyboard will respond. However, the Fn+Home/End (brightness +/-) works. Nothing else. There's no windows popping up, no nothing. Just a freezed screen.

Has anyone had this issue before? Should I do a format C:?

Best regards

Peter

Strange crashes after doing updates

#2 Post by rayooo » Sun Apr 10, 2005 5:56 pm

I have a new T42
Upon receiving, I installed the new software update feature and proceeded to do the literally dozens of updates identified.

I had used the machine for approximately 1 week prior to doing the updates, with few if any problems.

After doing the updates, I began having problems.
Most serious was intermittent shut-down problems where during shut down I'd randomly get the critical stop sound and a dialog box that flashed on briefly just before the display going dark, so, I could not read what it said.

Upon re-booting, things like the Quick Launch toolbar would no longer appear etc. Spent a few days talking to IBM support, basically got no help whatsoever. Finally, after doing factory preset installs and being sure to set restore points in windows, I determined that doing the Intel ProSet updates and the Acess connection update caused my problems. I've now done virtually all updates with the exception of those, and things are running fine. Interesting to note that the one update listed as "Manditory" seems to cause problems for me.

Thanks for the info. I'll try to roll back those two, and see if there's a difference.
